Kaweesi murder suspects granted bail

The suspects were arrested in March following the murder of Kaweesi, his bodyguard Kenneth Erau and driver Godfrey Mambewa on March 17.

KAWEESI | BAIL FOR SUSPECTS

Tears of joy and emotions overshadowed Nakawa Chief Magistrate's court this morning as seven of the 23 people accused of murdering former Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Andrew Felix Kaweesi, were granted bail.

These are; Sheikh Musa Ntende, Umar Maganda, Hassan Tumusiime, Ibrahim Kissa, Hamid Magambo, Abdul-Majid Ojerere and Ahmada Shaban Ssenfuka.

They were arrested in March at various places following the murder of Kaweesi, his bodyguard Kenneth Erau and driver Godfrey Mambewa on March 17, in the city suburbs of Kulambiro, Nakawa division, meters away from Kaweesi's residence.

Grade One Magistrate Noah Ssajjabi bonded each of them at sh50m (non cash), while their sureties were bonded at sh500m (non cash).

"I note that you have spent over six months on remand without committal. Therefore, I am inclined to release on bail under Article 23 of the Constitution," Ssajjabi ruled.

They were received by their relatives chanting Takibir Allah Akbar (God is great).

Prosecution alleges that the accused, between January and March 2017, in diverse districts of Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono, Jinja, Iganga, Bugiri, Busia, Tororo and others, for purposes of influencing government or intimidating the public for political and religious aims, indiscriminately without due regard of the safety of others directly involved themselves in complicity of murder of Kaweesi.

It further alleges that the accused used a gun or a deadly weapon and robbed Erau of a rifle SMG serial number POL 56-3686844-04683 and a pistol serial number UG. POL 007315.

It also stated that the accused rendered support to Balyejusa and Ogutu, who are members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group in executing terrorism acts by securing them national identity cards.
