Sula Matovu as top seed is favourite for the title

Nile Special National Open Final (Sat, Lugogo)

The organisers of the 2017 Nile Special National Pool Open grand finale have pulled a move that should get the players' competitive juices going ahead of the competition.

In an unprecedented stroke of genius the prize car will be the first thing participants see when the walk into the premises of the Lugogo arena.

"Precedence shows that the prize car has never been at Lugogo before 7pm it always came in after players settled at the hall," Pool Association of Uganda publicity secretary Dennis Ngobi said.

"This time round we have decided that the winning car should be staged at Lugogo the night before so that it's the first thing the players see when they arrive at the venue," he added.

Clearly the move is geared towards whetting the appetite and for most of the players involved.  There is no bigger motivation than the Toyota Altezza, sh5m and the super league pool table.

Sula Matovu as top seed is favourite for the title but is on the wrong side of history. No man has ever successfully defended the national open title which should pose a threat to his dominance.

The defending champion has had an up and down season. He has performed well in the individual tournaments even winning the independence cup recently but has been lacklustre with CKI his club side.

Behind Sula is the very consistent Fahad Ssewankambo who captains league side Skin Samona,  he was champion in 2014, if he is in good form today you cannot rule him out.

Most of the players that will play at Lugogo will fancy themselves to go on and challenge for the biggest title in the sport because the opportunity is there to be taken.

As with most knockout competitions anything can happen, a small lapse and David suddenly overpowers Goliath.
