Wakiso parents tipped on children values

Parents and pupils face off in the debate 

Over 400 parents in Wakiso district have been tipped on values necessary for their children's excellence in their studies. 

This was during the day to mark the "School values day" for Namugongo Mixed Primary School in Kira Municipality, in Wakiso district yesterday.

The event attracted over 2,000 pupils from primary schools across Kira municipality and officials from Parental Roles in Values Empowerment (PROVE). PROVE is a civil society organisation working in Wakiso district to promote key education values. 

The deputy general secretary Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU), Philbert Baguma, said the extreme moral decadency in the country required parents to guide their children with the correct moral direction.

"As parents, we need to teach our children what to emulate. Speak with them about honesty, respect, justice, hard work, integrity, share, love, good health, Godliness, forgiveness and self-control," he said.

He warned them against domestic violence as he advised them to always find time and share on life related issues with their children. 

A debate between parents and the pupils fired up the day's events.

Debating under the theme; Integrity is more important than creativity, the children, who proposed, beat the parents who were on the other side of the argument.

The chairperson Wakiso district headteachers' association, William Bwambale, said the gesture of parents accepting a debate with pupils drew parents to their closer to what is expected of them- ensuring better education performance in the district.

"These activities range from weekly training sessions of both teachers and the pupils, with the aim of imparting values," she said.

The PROVE executive director, Tom Bamuheirwe, said that they embarked on creating a platform that would see parents reach schools as co-educators reinforcing the socially accepted values for today and future peaceful societies.
