UMU marks 24 years

The Vice-Chancellor of Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi (UMU), Prof John Chrysostom Maviiri has praised the government of Uganda for the support it has given the University, since its inception in 1993.

He paid even greater tribute to the government for the role it played in the University’s bid to host the World Bank sponsored Africa Centre of Excellence for Agro-Ecology and Livelihood Systems, which he said will develop capacity for Uganda, Eastern and Southern Africa.

“It is because of the support that we got from government that the World Bank recently approved this mega project, which is worth USD6m. We acknowledge the strong partnership and goodwill of the government for UMU and we pray that the cordial relations continue,” Maviiri said.

He made the remark during the celebrations for the 24^th anniversary of Uganda Martyrs’ University, Nkozi. The celebrations at the University’s main campus in Mpigi District, on Wednesday, were graced by students, alumni, parents and staff of the University.

Maviiri asked government to extend even more support to the University as it prepares to celebrate its silver Jubilee, on October 18, 2018.

“We are doing self-evaluation and rebranding, to leap into the future with confidence. We shall be knocking at the doors of government to support our strategic objectives as we would like to consolidate our unique feature of quality education grounded in Christian ethical values. We firmly pledge to deliver the type of graduate skilled and cultured to contribute to the achievement of Uganda Vision 2040.”

Maviiri later informed the congregation that construction of the University’s Silver Jubilee Complex at Rubaga would soon start. He said that the first block of the complex (first phase) would consume USD 9.1million.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Alex Kakooza thanked the Catholic Bishops of Uganda (Uganda Episcopal Conference) for founding Uganda Martyrs’ University, Nkozi. He later pledged government’s continued support to the University.

Earlier during mass, the Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, who is also the Patron of the University, asked the management and staff of the University to prioritise Science courses to make the students even more competitive and relevant in the job market.

The message of the PS was delivered by the ministry’s Commissioner for Higher Education, Jolly Uzamukunda.
