In 1962, Uganda consisted of Federal States, Districts and the territory of Mbale.

The Federal States are the Kingdom of Buganda, the Kingdom of Ankole, the Kingdom of Bunyoro, the Kingdom of Toro and the territory of Busoga.

The Districts are the Districts of Acholi, Bugisu, Bukedi, Karamoja, Kigezi, Lango, Madi, Sebei, Teso and West Nile. The demarcation of a district as an administrative unit came with the colonial government.

By 1959, Uganda had 16 districts and at the time of independence in 1962 one more district was created.  In 1945 Uganda divided into four provinces of Buganda, Eastern, Northern and Western.

The provinces were sub-divided into districts In 1962: Uganda became independent on October 9. Buganda, Tooro,  Bunyoro, and Ankole became kingdoms. The Areas with district status were Acholi, Mubende, Lango , Sebei, Bombo, Bugisu, Karamoja, Kigezi, Madi, Masaka, Mpigi, Sebei, Teso, Busoga Bukedi and West Nile.

In 1966, The kingdoms were abolished by president Obote after he abrogated the Independence Constitution and came up with another Constitution.

Then status of Busoga changed from being a territory to district. Buganda Kingdom also got divided to create four districts of Mpigi, Masaka, Mubende and Bombo.
