Uganda's Police Chiefs since 1899

Uganda has had 14 police chiefs since 1899.

The term Inspector General of Police or Police Chief is not a recent title in Uganda's history. Uganda got her first Police chief in 1934 in the names of HM King.  From then to date, 15 people have served in that portifolio.

  1. Maj Gen Kale Kayihura (2005 to date)

  2. Lt Gen Katumba Wamala (April 2001 - Nov 2005)

  3. John Kisembo (1999-2001)

  4. John Cossy Odomel (1992-1999)

  5. Apollo Byekwaso (1990-1992)

  6. Wilson Erinayo Oryema (1964-1971)

  7. David Barlow (1979-80) - He was police chief at the time of the famous, "No Lule, No Work" demonstrations in 1979. W. B. Musoke

  8. Okoth Ogola - 1981, Ogola was appointed Inspector General of Police.

  9. Luke Ofungi - He served as police chief in three different regimes. Ofungi first served as IGP from 1973 -1974. He was IGP again from May 1980-December 1980; May 1985-1986 and 1986 to 1989.
