RDC demands council resolution on age limit

AGE LIMIT | KYANKWANZI RESOLUTION

The Kyankwanzi resident district commissioner (RDC), Robert Kashaija, has tasked the district council to convene urgently and pass a resolution in support of the lifting of the presidential age limit.

Kashaija was at a ground breaking ceremony to build a community school by NGO Building Tomorrow in Byerima sub-county over the weekend.

He said it was necessary to open up on article 102b to give chance to the category of Ugandans above 75 years to be presidents.

"I have already consulted with the district leaders and agreed to fix a council session soon. We want to have a resolution that backs up the 2016 NRM party district conference that supported the adjustment of the clause in the Constitution," he said.

He was supported by the district Woman MP, Ann Maria Nankabirwa, who claimed that they maintained support for the lifting of the presidential age limit in Kyankwanzi.

She said Kyankwanzi MPs and leaders had consulted the people at different platforms and they had their backing on the matter.

"I advise my fellow MPs to go back and consult the electorates on the matter, other than posturing with their own opinions at the chagrin of the electorates," Nankabirwa said.

Nankabirwa condemned the brutal actions of the Police last week, as it foiled dissenting voices against the issue in anticipation of a private member's Bill by Igara county MP Raphael Magyezi to lift the age limit.

The district speaker, Halima Nasali, said the council had passed a motion to remove the presidential age limit last year.

"This was shortly after the district NRM party conference overwhelmingly backed efforts to remove upper cap age limitations on the President," she said.

She said they officially handed their resolution to the President.

The Butemba county MP, Innocent Kamusiime Pentagon, said he was not yet through with consulting voters on the matter.

"Whatever decision my voters make, I will abide by it, even if it means going against my own party's (NRM) resolve on the matter," he said.

Ntwetwe constituency legislator Joel Yoweri Ssebikali said he backed the resolution of the district party conference with no regrets.
