When the Lugogo Indoor Stadium was closed for renovation in 2009, one of the main sports that were set to benefit immensely from the renovation was basketball.

But initial works were not up to standard and the floor that replaced the wooden one that had spent decades was found wanting and had to be replaced at the over 50 year structure.

Though the lighting remains poor for most of the indoor sport, the renovated arena remains the only public indoor facility in the country.

Ahead of the Zone V basketball championships due in about 8 days, the City Oilers have lightened up the facility with a state of the art electronic score board that now eases the work of the basketball match officials.

The equipment was unveiled during the Pemba Warriors versus KIU Titans FUBA Basketball League game and officially handed over to the FUBA president Ambrose Tashobya, by City Oilers manager Ahmed Hassan in the presence of other team officials Mohamed Santur as well as City Tyres marketing manager Herbert Bashaasha.

Tashobya also passed on the mantle of ensuring its safety to National Council of Sports chairman John Bosco Onyik, who are the managers of the facility that was built in the colonial times.

The biggest beneficiaries will be the fans and journalists who will no longer stretch their necks to follow the scores as they will now be able to follow the time left, top scorers in a particular game and the scores instantly.

Although the officials did not divulge the amount they spent on the board, their gesture was applauded by many of the enthusiastic fans who turned up on Friday night.

The facility was renovated by MTN to the tune of over sh1.4bn but despite the new hoops that were later procured by NCS, lacked an electronic scoreboard which is a basic requirement at such facilities.
