Apple farmers in Kabale district have a reason to smile after receiving 58,324 seedlings from the National Agriculture Advisory Secretariat (NAADS).

Lt. Col. Charles Tebaruraho, the Operation Wealth Creation Co-ordinator for Kabale district, said that if farmers embrace apple farming it will boost their income.

"A well-developed apple tree yields around 300 apples.  An apple costs between sh700 and sh1000.  If our farmers embrace apple farming on a large scale, they will surely benefit a lot," he said.

The Kabale resident district commissioner, Darious Nandinda, hailed the NRM government for enabling its people fight poverty through such programmes.

"Since the introduction of OWC, our people have been receiving free supplies from government. We hope that this will help them get out of poverty," said Nandinda.

Patrick Besigye Keihwa, the Kabale district Chairperson called on agricultural officers to sensitise farmers on the best farming methods for better production.

"Even if we keep supplying products to these farmers without proper sensitisation, they will not get the best out of these supplies. That is when rains come and sweep away all gardens because farmers do not know how to practice good farming," said Keihwa.

The beneficiary sub-counties include Kyanamira, Kaharo, Maziba, Buhara, Kabale Municipality, Kamuganguzi, Katuna TC, Rubaya, Butanda and Kaharo.
