Screen off your home with a wooden fence and save

You need to explore the beauty of a pallet fence to appreciate the aesthetics of wood.

Remember, a fence speaks a lot about a home.

However, Emmanuel Wanda, a wood expert with Arnon services in Kampala argues that a beautiful pallet fence can outcompete one of concrete, wire mesh or plants.

"It adds appeal to your home while providing privacy," he notes.

For security, you can reinforce it with wire mesh, barbed wire and screening plants like palms and shrubs.

How to install a pallet fence

Wanda says that materials needed include: Pallets, nails, screws, bolts, and timber or eucalyptus poles.

After dissembling the pallets, sand the pieces that are going to be used.

Dig up the frame and make a straight line using a string.  Dig up holes of up to 2ft for a strong fence.

Make the pole frame where the pallets are going to be put.

Determine a pattern according to the level of the ground.

You need to get the measurements right.

 
Assemble the pallets according to the pattern chosen.

Vanish or paint the fence. You can also treat the wood to deter termites invasion.

To avoid domestic accidents, Wanda says that they take a final look at the compound to make sure it's safe for any infants and pets.

"After working on a site, we watch out for any dangerous pieces of wood and nails," he elaborates.

The uniqueness of a pallet fence

According to Wanda, a pallet fence is very affordable compared to perimeter walls that require bricks, sand, cement, water proof chemicals and more labor to install.

"It also takes less time to install," he adds.

After collecting all the necessary materials on site, Wanda affirms that it takes his team of 3 only 2 days to install a 10m perimeter wall.

However, for any bigger dimensions, the time and schedule are adjusted accordingly though with a small difference compared to the time taken in installing a perimeter wall of the same size.

Edward Lutakoma, a carpenter says that a pallet fence can be installed in a number of patterns, styles and functions depending on the tastes and preference of the home owner.

For example, some clients prefer horizontal while others, vertical panels.

It's easy to maintain as one can opt to vanish or even paint it.

Pallet fences are also very clean and light, they give a home owner a good and conducive atmosphere.

"Pallets are meant for outside use so in most cases, they are made from durable weather resistant wood and would take a while to call for repair," he explains.

Security

"Like mentioned earlier, it's a semi security fence which can be broken in easily," he notes.

Wanda says that they install up-to 3 layers together to make it strong enough.

"We can also add barbed wire or razor wire on top to beef up security," he adds.

The cost

The cost of installing a pallet fence depends a lot on dimensions and distance from Kampala.
