Indian women to renovate Kampala schools

The Indian Women Association (IWA) has teamed up with Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in an attempt to renovate the dilapidated government schools around in the city centre.

The association's chairperson, Suman Venkatesh, announced that the proceeds from the Indian Women Race for Life held on August 20, will be directed towards renovating Kasubi Church of Uganda primary school.

She was speaking during the award ceremony at Acacia Mall.

"We are working closely with KCCA under their Kampala schools programme to make sure we improve the lives of children studying in these schools," Venkatesh stated.

She said IWA hopes to raise sh250m through the fund-raising drive that is needed to completely renovate the school.

The 5km, 10km run and wheelchair race that started and ended at Kati-Kati along the Lugogo Bypass attracted over 900 participants.

Among the winners at the fourth edition of the annual event were Peter Kibet and Janat Chemusto, who walked away with sh2m each in the men and women's 10km run that started and ended at Kati-Kati along the Lugogo by-pass.

In the 5km, Vincent Chemutai and Teddy Chekwemboi also pocketed sh1m for winning the men and women's category.

Meanwhile, in the wheelchair category, Christopher Ziraba and Vasta Kyalimpa received sh1m each in the men and women category, respectively.

Other participants like Nathan Ayeko, Rebbecca Cherop won sh1m for second place finish in the 10km's while Kereen Chemusto, Oscar Kibet, Gerald Kaketo and Prossy Naiga are among the other winners at the run and they bagged sh750,000 in the deferent categories.
