Ugandan Asians in the UK plot health investment in Uganda

Scheduled for the 3rd November this year, over 300 Ugandans of Asian origin living in the United Kingdom will meet at the Leicester Medical University to curve out plans on how best to invest in Uganda's health sector.

The health summit according to the organisers, is aimed at contributing towards a better understanding of the business environment within the healthcare and life science sector in Uganda, focusing on linkages between the private-public sectors in Uganda.

"President Yoweri Museveni, has encouraged the exiled Ugandan Asians to return home and contribute to development of Uganda and many Ugandan Asians in United Kingdom are keen to support beyond business and commerce but also in sectors such as health care and education." said Jaffer Kapasi, the Uganda Business Honorary Consul to Midlands UK.

The event expected to be attended by the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Health, Dr Diana Atwine, has key among its deliberations exploring health partnerships and business opportunities, collaboration on health care development in northern Uganda, strengthening emergency care in Uganda and developing sustainable global health partnerships.

According to Moses Mulimira, the head of the Uganda-UK Health Alliance, the summit is also expected to attract international health business organisations and universities.

"Health is an investment, not a cost. We continue to push the case for promoting healthier lives as the way to prevent illness, disability and premature death by encouraging both private and government investments in uganda" Mulimira said.

Leicester is home to majority of the Ugandan Asian population in the UK and as explained by Mulimira, they are excited about exploring opportunities back home.
