The Ministry of Education has extended the deadline for receiving applications from learners intending to secure loans to finance their higher (education) training.

The State Minister for Higher Education, John Muyingo, announced that the deadline has been extended from August 4 to 18 for undergraduate students and to 31 for learners seeking to pursue diploma courses.

The decision, according to the minister, was prompted by the delays in admission by the public and private universities.

The Higher Education Students' Financing Board which runs the student loan scheme called for applications on May 22, and set the August 4 deadline for receipt of requests for loans.

"We have noted that a number of students have not yet accessed the admission letters from some universities and other tertiary institutions which is a requirement to apply. We have, therefore, decided to extend the deadline to accommodate students who have not yet been issued with admission letters," Muyingo, stated at a press conference at Media Centre in Uganda on Monday.

The board chairman, Prof. Callisto Locheng, said applications can be obtained at 18 universities, Centenary bank branches, the board's website and office, Resident District Commissioners and Chief Administrative Officers' offices.

Since 2014 when the scheme was launched, the Government has given loans to 3,799 students, and intends to add over 1,000 beneficiaries in the next academic year.
