New rhino born at Ziwa Ranch

This is the fifth calf of Nandi

The birth of a 20th rhino at Ziwa Ranch last week is a thrill to environmentalists and nature lovers in the country.

This comes after their reintroduction following a total extinction in 1986.

"The news of a newly born rhino is very exciting," said executive director Ziwa Rhino Ranch, Angie Genada.

"The mother of the new male is called Nandi. This is her fifth calf with a husband called Moja" She added

"I still remember the first rhino born here was named Obama in 1998. We now have 9 females and 11 males" said Genada.

"Obama is growing very vibrant besides maturing. We expect it to get three or more spouses and mark its own territory."

On a sad note, in the recent past, Justice one of the calves born at the ranch was killed by an older rhino Talewo, in 2005. They were engaged in a fight all night which left the budding bull fatally wounded.

"That is expected in an environment where survival is for the fittest," said Genada.

"The more reason they are under watch 24/7. It is for safety against poachers and from themselves."
