KAMPALA - The energy ministry and Eskom, one of the power producers, have launched a campaign to promote efficient and sustainable energy use.

The campaign will officially be launched in Lira next week.

It will involve sensitizing the people about the need to embrace energy saving technologies and using the available sources of energy in a sustainable manner.

Several companies will also exhibit to the public the available energy saving appliances between July 25 and 29 at the Mayor's gardens in Lira town.

The energy ministry permanent secretary, Dr. Stephen Isabalija, said the campaign is vital at the time when Government is seeking to promote alternative sources of energy and increasing power consumption as well as reducing its cost.

"We need to increase access to clean energy which is good for the environment. That is why we are promoting alternative sources of energy and free connection to power," Isabalija said during a press conference at energy ministry in Kampala on Wednesday.

Thozama Gangi, the Chief executive officer at Eskom, said the campaign is seeking to educate Ugandans on the efficient energy use, and that the drive is in line with the company's goal of conserving the environment.
