Government to reward best performing ministries

Government  is set to recognize its best performing ministries, Departments and Agencies,(MDAs) for their exemplary  services, tomorrow at Kololo independence ground.

 According to state for public service minister David Karubanga, the best performing ministries are to be rewarded with trophies including Gold, silver bronze,  in recognition  of the   Africa Public Service Day (APSD), which is cerebrated annually on the 23rd June.

 (APSD) is commemorated annually on the 23rd June in recognition of the United Nations Public Service Day.  However Since Uganda was hosting the International Refugee Day Convention on 23rd June in Kampala, the celebrations were postponed to Friday,

 Asked for the best ministries to be rewarded, Karubanga who was flanked by Commissioner for public service inspection, Charles Twinomigisha,  declined to disclose them .

According Twinomugisha the public service has a total of 311,630, employees, comprising of Uganda police force  (43,799) , prison forces (9873) primary health care workers,(35,915), local government workers,(21,089), central ministries, (18,184 ), public university staff (6,477) different government agencies(3,739), district political leaders (3,048), town council workers (2,896), Agriculture extinction workers,(2,298),  district chairpersons (91) and  68 justices and judges.

In a press briefing yesterday at the Uganda Media Centre, Kampala Twinomugisha said "The 2017 celebrations are guided by the theme entrenching a citizen-centered Service delivery culture, partnering with the youth for Africa's transformation."

"My ministry interviewed different communities at random country wide who seek for public services, from different ministries and also interviewed people seeking for health care services from major referral hospitals," Karubanga explained.

Karubanga said the rewarding shall reflect on the challenges, successes and failures its mission, objectives, programs and projects, problems and functioning of the Public Service.

Twinomugisha emphasized that the rewarding of public servants, will motivate  and encourage deserving officers, for their new initiatives and innovations introduced, adding  that  it will prepare  the Public Service for a better future through proposing changes for the social well-being of society especially the Youth

  "It will also provide a forum for Public Officers and the general public to reflect on the performance of the Public Service in Uganda and Africa" Twinomugisha added.

He explained the activities will involve: mobilizing the youth within their communities to carry out Social responsibility programs in the catchment communities including voluntary contribution of funds and items in kind to vulnerable groups, marking of zebra crossings;

"Health workers will carry out HIV/Aids Voluntary Counseling and testing, blood donation drives among others." he added
