Nakivubo Stadium re-development takes shape

The developer has first put priority on the ‘perimeter wall’ consisting of hundreds of lock up shops

With the old Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium no more, the emerging structure around it gives hope to the ordinary fan that maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Earlier fears that the whole stadium would be turned into a big shopping mall can be put to rest at the moment as the construction continues.

Another peep into the facility shows a littered place with signs of destruction and heaps of debris occupying where the former field and structures were due to the ongoing works.

From the look of things, the developer has first put priority on the ‘perimeter wall' consisting of hundreds of lock up shops from which he envisages recouping his investment.

The former Makerere Wing side in now guarded by a three storied structure just like the Kisenyi, former pavilion and Makerere wings; is, going by the current construction is also going to be guarded by shops in what might be the biggest preoccupation (shopping) when construction finally ends.

At the moment a semblance of the stadium foundation can only be seen at the side bordering the Ham Shopping mall behind the former Kirrusia, suggesting the playing field which many stakeholders feared would be no more is catered for.

At the former Park Yard originally designated as parking area in the old Nakivubo Stadium plan, it is a big shopping mall that has sprung up first.

The development came days after over ten thousand vendors and traders who were doing business at the Parkyard Market in Nakivubo area in Kampala were evicted on the orders of the Minister for Kampala, Betty Kamya.

Before there were running battles on who should carry out and complete the last phase of redevelopment around the stadium between Futureland Uganda Limited, Bestin Limited and Ntelenfune Enterprises which ended with Ham having the final say from the courts.
