Refugee donations to Uganda: A breakdown of contributors

REFUGEE EMERGENCY

The European Union has called on "all non-traditional donors" to intervene in the humanitarian efforts towards the South Sudan emergency.

This comes only days after Uganda successfully hosted the Solidarity Summit on Refugees in Kampala.

During the two-day summit (June 22-23), attended by UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres and several other high-profile leaders, as much as US$354m was pledged to Uganda for the refugee humanitarian response.

In a statement congratulating Uganda for successfully hosting the summit, the European Union said it "stands with Uganda in facing this crisis".

"The EU and its member states in Uganda already fund 47% of the humanitarian response to the South Sudan emergency," said the missive.

S. Sudan conflict 'must stop'

Uganda hosts more than one million refugees, majority of whom are from conflict-battered South Sudan. These make part of the 65 million people around the workd that have been forced from home, according to the EU.

The number of refugees in Uganda has "more than doubled to over 1.2 million" since mid-last year.

"At the summit, the EU and its member states pledged $290 million in solidarity with Uganda. This means that the EU represents more than 80% of total pledges made. We call on all non-traditional donors to join the effort," said the statement.

"As stated clearly by many delegations at the Summit, the conflict in South Sudan must stop."

Standing by Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the EU went on to condemn "in the strongest terms violence and armed conflict that continues to be perpetrated by government forces as well as all other armed groups in South Sudan, targeting defenceless civilians and causing huge loss of lives, destruction of property, and uprooting millions of South Sudanese from their homes to take refuge in the neighbouring states or suffer as internally displaces persons within their country”.
