Uganda Cranes mean business - Micho

Jun 13, 2017

FUFA president Moses Magogo has however warned against excitement

It is rare for coach Milutin ‘Micho' Sredojevic to open up about his achievements but following the 1-0 away win against seeded Cape Verde, the Serb has said that Uganda Cranes is fighting for a slot among the top footballing teams in Africa.

"It will just be crazy if we (Uganda) don't rank among the top sixty in FIFA and 15 in CAF this time round. We have got the result (win against Cape Verde) and it should be able to take us there," an excited Micho said.

Uganda has won 32 games since 2013, nine of them in away victories in competitive matches and of that Micho said "it is clear signal that we mean business now".

Uganda is currently ranked 71st in the FIFA rankings and 22nd in Africa and Micho has always argued that the country deserves better rankings.

Uganda Cranes' next matches will be Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers against South Sudan on July 14th and 21st.

Micho said that the team requires a friendly match against a North African side before engaging Egypt in World Cup qualifiers in August and September.

FUFA president Moses Magogo however warned against excitement that may cause complacency as the Cranes continue their campaign to qualify for AFCON 2019.

He urged Micho and his players to watch out for their next competitive games arguing that the trend of victories in African football are no longer as predictive as they used to be.

"The trend in African football has changed. We need to be very cautious in our next games because results of the games against Ivory Coast, Nigeria and the like means we need to be cautious in our next games otherwise we can also lose at home," Magogo warned.

While Uganda Cranes fought hard to win away against Cape Verde on Sunday, African giants Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Botswana lost their home games.

Uganda Cranes plays Egypt in a back to back World Cup qualifiers home and away on August 27 and September 2 respectively.
