President Yoweri Museveni has urged Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) and the Ministry of Works to establish their own fully fledged road construction units.

Speaking at the commissioning of the newly acquired sh500b fleet of road construction equipment from Japan on Friday in Wakiso, Museveni noted that construction units under UNRA and the Ministry of works could help government save a lot of money.

Museveni noted that currently government loses a lot of money in tendering private companies to tarmac small kilometers of roads especially in the urban centres.

"You dis-empowered yourselves by tendering out all the road construction works including 10kms," he said.

Museveni added that the government's road construction units should help the country tarmac roads in easy terrain.

Earlier at the function, the Minister of Works, Monica Ntege Azuba had told the President that some of the newly acquired road equipment would be given out to construction units under the Ministry and UNRA.

President Museveni also noted that the acquisition of the equipment had marked the end of tendering of road construction works in districts. He promised that his government will fuel the equipment for the districts.

Each district was given equipment worth sh2.7b to maintain its roads. The road equipment included graders, tippers, road compactors and bulldozers.
