Sprinter Alupo qualifies for World U18 Championships

The 10th edition of the biennial event is due July 12-16 in Nairobi

Rising Ugandan sprinter Rita Alupo took Tororo by surprise over the weekend with a performance that saw her hit the qualifying mark for the 2017 IAAF World U18 Championships in Nairobi. 

The eastern region track and field championships held at Tororo Municipal sports ground has now brought the number of athletes that have qualified for this year's global event to 12. 

Alupo, 14, a Senior 2 student of Tororo High School proved her prowess in the 200m, winning in a time of 20.05 seconds and erasing her personal best of 23.03. 

"I had been longing for this qualification time. My assignment is to ensure that I put up my best to win medals," said an elated Alupo. 

The 10th edition of the biennial event is due July 12-16 in Nairobi. 

"The IAAF World Youth Championships is not just another athletics competition; it is an opportunity for youngsters to gain valuable experience, to improve personal bests and to build friendly relationships with their rivals from every corner of the world," said Dominic Otucet, the president Uganda Athletics Federations. 

Otucet while talking to New Vision said the federation is looking at increasing the number of athletes to 20.
