CSOs appeal to US on environment support

Civil society organisations (CSOs) have appealed to government to lobby the US government to continue supporting advocacy of climate change in Africa.

The General secretary of Shelter and Settlements Alternatives (SSA) Charles Ofwono said that the US government should continue to support climate change in Africa. He said that the US imports most of their food from Africa.

 "We should lobby organizations, communities and individuals working together to advocate for better policies towards improving our environment. We should sustain improvement of human settlements in Uganda together", Ofwono said. 

Ofwono said the US is the second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, followed by China. This was during a press conference to commemorate the world environment day in Kampala. 

Trump earlier this month announced that the US was withdrawing from the Paris accord.

 "In order to fulfill my solemn duty to protect America and its citizens the US will withdraw from the Paris climate accord. We hope to begin negotiations to enter the Paris accord on really entirely new transition on terms that are fair to the United States", said Trump.

This year's theme, "Connecting People to Nature", invites us to think about how we are part of nature and how intimately we depend on it. It challenges us to find fun and exciting ways to experience and cherish this vital relationship, Ofwono said. 

"With this technology, SSA designed and successfully implemented a pilot project of low cost and eco-friendly housing units of 24 housing units in Bujjuko Wakiso district to  beneficiary members of Kwefako housing cooperative last year", Ofwono noted.

The coordinator of Revelations Life Organization Macdonald Bumba called government to take better stewardship of our natural resources to insure survival of the future. He said that the well-being of the environment and the world's economy depends upon the responsible management of natural resources.

 "We have conducted community clean-ups and sensitization drives around different settlements in Kampala with assistance from Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).People are able to keep cleaning their environment in their communities", Bumba said.
