Red onions are at a low supply in most local markets for two months now.

Onions, commonly used to add flavor to different sauces plus salads, come in all forms and sizes. There are red onions in both big and small sizes, as well as the spring onions, which are leaf-like.

In local markets, a kilogram of big red onions ranges between sh3, 000 and sh4, 000 and in an upscale supermarket, a kilogram costs sh5,000.

According to Susan Nakato, a trader at Nakasero market, one can get the big red onions for as low as sh500 if one is taking like 3 to 4 bulbs.

For the small-sized onions, their prices have gone down, it being that they are on-season.

They are usually tied and sold in bundles due to their size.

At Ggaba market, a small bundle ranges between sh500 to sh 1,000 and a medium-sized one at around sh1, 000 and sh2,000.

Spring onions

"The supply of the leaf-like onions [spring] is up due to the rainy season that has been on for some time now," says Musa Kabenge.

For Bunga and Ggaba markets,  a small bundle costs between sh1, 000 and sh2, 000 while a big bundle ranges between sh3, 500 to sh4,000.

Garlic

These look like onions though they are white in color and have a stronger aroma.

Traders say it is unusual for garlic to be off-market as it is on season after season.

In supermarkets, bulbs of garlic are packed in a netted bag, where a bag containing five bulbs of garlic costs sh4, 000 and a 250gram can of powdered garlic at sh4, 500.

At Nakasero market, a kilogram of garlic bulbs is at sh2,000.
