Kyambogo lecturers go on strike

The strike was declared this afternoon after the lecturers and the university administration failed to reach an agreement over the payment.

Over 700 Kyambogo University lecturers have gone on strike over unpaid salaries and allowances.

The strike was declared this afternoon after the lecturers and the university administration failed to reach an agreement over the payment.

According to the chairperson of Kyambogo University Academic staff Association, Grace Lubaale, the lecturers are demanding a six months' salary.

The strike is a big blow for the university that has been plunged from one crisis to another, most of which stem from financial squeeze the university is facing.

The university's top management had promised to pay the salaries last Friday, but was unable to honor the promise.

The strike could not have come at a worse time for the university. "There are some students currently on internship. Others are on school practice. They need supervising. But we are not going to do any work until all the arrears have been paid," said a lecturer in the Education faculty, who preferred anonymity.
