KAMPALA - Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah has called upon legislators to take the lead in the fight against the torture of children in the country.

In a meeting between legislators and civil society organizations to discuss issues pertaining to the torture and violence against children, it emerged that over 755 children are victims of domestic violence while 40% of children between the age of five and 15 make up the country's labor force.

Oulanyah has warned that it is the responsibility of MPs to ensure that government prioritizes programs and initiatives aimed at strengthening laws and policies that have been put in place to protect children's rights.

Stella Odong, the Executive Director of Uganda Child Rights NGO Network, said that there is still need for financial support from the government to ensure the implementation of laws and policies that have been put in place by government to protect children's rights.
