Health ministry procures 6 ambulances for Martyr's day celebrations

Kayongo said that the ministry will provide ambulances for the day to attend to emergencies and several doctors will join the private doctors from private hospitals to cater to patients.

The Ministry of Health has secured 6 ambulances to transport patients during the Uganda Martyrs Day, Dr David Kayongo on behalf of Dr Diana Atwine the Permanent Secretary, has said.

He said on Tuesday (yesterday May 23) at Uganda Martyrs Shrine Namugongo during the last general meeting of preparations Martyrs Day 2017, said that the ambulances were secured with support from the ministry of health.

 

Kayongo said that the ministry will provide ambulances for the day to attend to emergencies and several doctors will join the private doctors from private hospitals to cater to patients.    

He said that 6 ambulances will be handling difficult cases. The ambulance staff will work together with the doctors, he said, they will be at the shrines premises before the martyr's day.

"The government will also provide 10 doctors at Catholic Martyrs Shrine they will work with those in private hospitals," Kayongo said.

"Working together with church the ministry will make sure that it caters to all patients, medical tents will be available to both shrines, and we are ready to do the service in any situation let people be sure of that," Kayongo said.  

He added that the ministry will also provide some medicine as addition to what medical committee prepared.

The ambulances, he said, will be available at the shrines, they will also work hand with police, security and Red Cross so that  they are easily  where the emergencies will be.   

However, Dr Dan Kyamanya, in charge of Health committee in Martyrs preparations said they would work with other hospitals such as Kisubi, Lubaga, St Francis Nsambya, Zia Angelina, Kirudu and Kawempe referral hospitals to provide services to those who need them.

The occasion that attracts millions of pilgrims from all over the world is held at both Shrines at Namugongo holy shrine where most of the 22 Catholic martyrs and 23 Anglicans were burnt to ashes.

Hoima Catholic Diocese has been chosen to lead the forthcoming Uganda Martyrs day celebrations that are held on June 3 of every year at Namugongo.

The annual event commemorates the heroic 45 Catholic and Anglican martyrs, who were killed by burning and beheading for their faith at the hands of Kabaka Mwanga of Buganda between 1885 and 1887.  Of the total number, 22 were professing Catholicism while the rest Protestantism.
