Vendors in Soroti count losses after heavy rains

Jane Apio one of the vendors said she had made bread which is sold at 100 shillings each in a full bucket but it was blown away by wind. The bread was worth 55, 000 shillings.

Vendors of Oderai market in Soroti sub-county, Soroti district incurred losses on Saturday after a heavy rain accompanied with wind blew off their merchandise.

Jane Apio one of the vendors said she had made bread which is sold at 100 shillings each in a full bucket but it was blown away by wind. The bread was  worth 55, 000 shillings.

She said that this is total loss to her as a single woman who is taking care of four children using the same business.

"I am not the only victim, majority of venders here are crying of the destruction that happened" Apio stated

New vision spoke to Lawrence Okello one of the chapatti makers who expressed his bitterness over the destruction of the kiosks.

"I lost shillings 30,000 as a result of wind that mixed up my chapatti with wet soil". Okello said

He added that five people on the same day survived death after a big tree fell on a house where they were having shelter".  Okello said

Hendry Ebetu the chairperson of the market said he received a complaint from vendors about the destruction but he had nothing to do since it was a natural disaster.

 

"The affected vendors should look for other alternatives of getting money to put back their business". He added
