Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi's mother, Virigo Nabukalu Kiwanuka, has died at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala at the age of 101.

Nabukalu, a former trainee Catholic nun was married to Alex Kiwanuka, an ex-Seminarian and a resident of Bulegeya in Kindu parish, Kyanamukaaka in Masaka district.

Kizito Kawonawo, Ssekandi's political aide said that Nabukalu, born in 1916, was pronounced dead a few minutes to 12:00PM on Friday where she had been admitted with 'complications related to old age'.

Kizito said that when Nabukalu clocked 97, she became too weak and stopped reading Bukedde, her favourite newspaper, which prompted her son to transfer her to his Kampala home in Lungujja, Rubaga Division, where she has lived since.

According to Kizito, Nabukalu loved reading newspapers every day. "She was reading Munno newspaper and when it stopped publication, she started reading Bukedde but she would demand a paper every day. Whenever I delayed, she would call me on her phone to remind me and I had to buy and deliver it to her," Kizito explained.

He described her as a staunch Catholic who even built a Church at her home where a priest or catechist would say mass every Sunday.

Kizito said that by Saturday, the body was still in Kampala but they had arranged prayers for her at her home on Sunday before burial.

The Vice President's official website Saturday posted an album photo of Nabukalu.
