On Thursday, Police constable Tonny Abalo testified that Kato and his co-accused did not seek permission when they carried out a demonstration in Kampala, which he said caused traffic in the city roads.

A police officer has told court that Makerere university guild president Paul Kato and three others demonstrated in the city suburbs without Police permission.

On Thursday, Police constable Tonny Abalo testified that Kato and his co-accused did not seek permission when they carried out a demonstration in Kampala, which he said caused traffic in the city roads.

"We first advised the accused to stop the demonstration because it was causing insecurity and traffic in Kampala but they refused and we arrested them," Abalo said.

Abalo told court that although over 100 students participated in the demonstration, they managed to arrest the four.

The court was presided over by Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Jamson Karemani.

Other accused persons are Ronald Ainebyona, Edmund Kahigi and Crispus Waswa.

However, when asked by defense lawyer Adam Kyomuhendo whether he knew where Namirembe road is located, he responded that he did not know.

The four were arrested by Police on November 7, 2016 along Namirembe road in Kampala while participating in unlawful demonstration.

They wanted the government to re-open Makerere University.

Earlier, President Yoweri Museveni had ordered for the closure of the university following continued strikes by lecturers over salary arrears.

Prosecution led by Emily Ninsiima alleges that the accused and others still at large on November 7, 2016, engaged in unlawful assembly which disrupted traffic flow in Kampala.

The case was adjourned to May 18 for further hearing
