Woman strangles baby, dumps it in latrine

A 20-year-old woman is being held at Ziroobwe Police Station in Luweero District, after she allegedly used a rope to strangle her newly born baby and later dumped the body in a pit latrine.

Solome Nabukeera, 20, a resident of Kajaawo village in Ziroobwe Sub County, Bamunanika County in Luweero, was arrested on Saturday morning after Police and residents recovered her baby's body from the pit latrine where it had been dumped.

The officer in charge of CID at Ziroobwe Police Station, Ruth Nakimbugwe said the body had a rope tied around its neck, an indication that the baby was strangled.

Nakimbugwe said Police were tipped off by residents who first saw the baby's body in the latrine.

She said the suspect was examined by a doctor who confirmed that Nabukeera had delivered a baby.

The suspect's mother, Jane Nalukenge, said her daughter had for some time been pregnant, but was on Saturday surprised to see her without neither the pregnancy nor a baby.

Nalukenge said she later learnt from villagers that a strangled body of a newly-born baby had been recovered from a latrine in the neighbourhood.

After being arrested, the suspect, together with the body of the baby were whisked off to Ziroobwe Police Station.

Scores of residents jammed the police station to have a glimpse of the suspect.

Ziroobwe LC3 chairman, Pascal Imarachi, who addressed the crowd at the police station, advised young women to avoid unplanned pregnancies.
