KAMPALA - Buganda beauty queens have thrown their weight behind the forthcoming Kabaka's Birthday Run.

This year's marathon is marking the 62nd birthday of Buganda king Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

Proceeds will this time round go to the fight against the sickle cell disease.

With several individuals and companies continuing to register for this Sunday's run, a group of Buganda beauty queens have joined in to support the case.

The group, including Miss Tourism Buganda Margaret Nakaye, bought 75 tickets and received kits at Vision Group head office in Kampala on Tuesday.

The young beautiful women are from Buganda counties including Kyagwe, Busiro, Ssese, Busujju, Bulemezi, Mawokota and others.

At Vision Group, they toured the premises including the Bukedde studio as well as the New Vision newsroom.

On her part, Nakaye said she is proud to have joined the cause of fighting sickle cell disease, saying the disease has become a burden to Ugandans yet it's very expensive to cure.

"I am proud to have joined the Kabaka birthday run. People have died of the disease whereas others have failed to get treatment because it needs travelling abroad."

New Vision Managing Editor Ben Opolot hailed the group for joining the cause.

Tickets for the run go for sh10, 000 and can be obtained at Vision Group offices, Airtel head offices along Wampewo Avenue, Post Branch in Ndeeba, Jinja road, Kikubo and Nkrumah road branches.
