Works & transport budget rises to sh4.8trillion

KAMPALA - The budget for the works and transport sector in the next financial increase by 27% from the current budget for the current financial.

Appearing before the parliament physical infrastructure committee today, the works and transport minister Azuba Ntege said the budget for sector will increase from sh3.8trillion to sh4.8trillion in the 2017/2018 financial year.

Ntege revealed that some of the major projects the ministry plans to undertake in the next financial year include revival of the national carrier and beginning the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway.

She said the sector is however facing a shortfall of sh818b for ongoing projects majorly because government has been unable to provide counterpart funding for various donor supported projects.

The latest Auditor General's report discovered that a total of 18triilion is money lying idle which government obtained in loans but is yet to utilize.

The World Bank last year in September suspended funding to Uganda partly because of poor absorption of the loans Uganda government obtains.
