Parents are required not to shy away from talking to their children about sex

Parents in Teso have been urged to educate their children on sex and its consequences.

According to Mary Chebet the senior woman teacher, Omasia Primary School in Magoro sub-county Katakwi district, parents are obliged to tell their children the importance of abstaining from any sexual behaviour which might ruin their lives.

Chebet said children were gifts from God to parents and for them to grow responsibly; parents should be at the forefront giving wise directives.

She argued that parents are required not to shy away from talking to their children about sex, sexual transmitted diseases like gonorrhoea, STI/STDS, HIV/AIDS among other illness.

"The importance of abstaining from any sexual behaviour must be taught well as this will prevent them from contracting diseases besides keeping them safe from early pregnancies which lead to school dropouts" Chebet observed.

She added that parents should not stop telling their children that if they indulge in sexual activities there was danger of getting unwanted pregnancies which may lead to abortion that may in turn lead to untimely deaths.

"Abortion can lead to destruction of the uterus hence causing infertility" she said.
