The minister also stated that the first wave will last five weeks and will end on February 17, saying at the end, about 4 million nets will have been distributed.

In a bid to control the burden of malaria, the Government is undertaking another countrywide distribution of Long Lasting Treated Mosquito Nets (LLINs) which are durable and cost effective.

This is meant to strengthen people's access to mosquito nets.

According to the health minister Jane Aceng, the ministry on January 16 flagged off 243 sub-county supervisors, 22 district supervisors and 22 district coordinators for the districts in the 1st wave of the distribution.

There are 22 districts in the first wave of distribution and they include Adjumani, Agago, Alebtong, Amuru, Apac, Arua and Gulu.

"This is meant to sustain the gains achieved in previous campaigns and improve on areas of net utilisation," she stated.

The minister also stated that the first wave will last five weeks and will end on February 17, saying at the end, about 4 million nets will have been distributed.

"On February 18, distribution of the nets in the 2nd wave will begin followed by a mop up exercise on February 19,"she stated.

In the press release by Health Ministry, Aceng also said a mosquito net will be given per two people in the household and the distribution shall be guided by Government structures majorly at local Government levels.

"The campaign will be phased in six waves across the country and is expected to run for six months. It will involve district level micro-planning and household registration then finally distribution," she stated.

Aceng appealed to Ugandans to register when village health teams visit them so that they receive the nets.

She also urged them to sleep under the nets daily throughout the year even when there are fewer cases of mosquitoes.

"Leaders should mobilise the locals for registration and picking of mosquito nets during distribution.

They should also sensitise communities on proper usage of the nets," she urged.
