Teso region lacks HIV counsellors - RDC

Dec 14, 2016

Speaking to Etop radio, Akonopesa says that much as the disease is deadly, government has ignored calls for the recruitment HIV/AIDS counsellors.

Serere Resident District Commissioner, George Edward Onya Akonopesa, has expressed concern over lack of HIV/AIDS counsellors in the district.

Speaking to Etop radio, Akonopesa said government should consider recruiting HIV/AIDS counsellors.

"There are no HIV/AIDS counselling and guidance personnel in all the health facilities in the district and Teso at large," he said.

Akonopesa added that although government supplies ARV's and other medical supplies, there is need for recruitment of HIV/AIDS counsellors.

"In order to lower the epidemic to zero levels, it might be necessary to have counsellors in the health centres and also go out to the communities to do counselling work," said Akonopesa.

The district health officer Serere, Dr Francis Odeke called for increased awareness regarding HIV/AIDS at all levels.
