5-yr-old, mother killed in Jinja accident

A five-year-old toddler and a 21- year-old mother died instantly while a father and his daughter sustained severe injuries after a speeding vehicle lost control and knocked them by the roadside.

The driver of Toyota Super Custom registration number UAX 079X fled after a fatal accident at Mutai- Kanale trading centre along the Jinja-Kamuli highway on Tuesday.

According to police spokesperson Kiira region Samson Lubega, the driver was heading to Jinja town from Kamuli district.

The deceased were identified as Sylvia Tumukunde, 21, and Hellen Mutalage, 5.

Police said Tumukunde, wife of Christopher Mukembo, residents of Mutai-Kanale, were going to fetch water from a nearby water source. 

Meanwhile Mutalage, who was together with their father, Geofrey Kabanda and his elder daughter, Shivan Mutalage, 8, were knocked as they waited for a taxi to Jinja town.

Both Shivan and Kabanda sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Jinja Hospital where they were nursing wounds.

Police attributed the accident to reckless driving.
