African player of the year: Onyango on list

“All the hardwork is being recognized."

It seems this could be Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Denis Onyango's best moment.

After guiding Uganda to Gabon and winning the CAF Champions League and league title with Mamelodi Sundowns, the lanky goal stopper has been named on a five-man list for the African player of the year award.

This award is for players based on the continent.

"All the hardwork is being recognized," is how Onyango put it on social media after learning that he had been shortlisted.

He is up against teammates Keegan Dolly (South Africa), Hlompho Kekana (South Africa), Khama Billiat (Zimbabwe) and TP Mazembe's Rainford Kalaba (Zambia).

The Ugandan first-choice goalie was also named in the Best XI of the recently-concluded CAF Champions League.

Being the first Ugandan to win the title, Uganda's football governing body FUFA awarded Onyango a land title of a four-acre piece of land through real estate company Canaan Sites.

The former SC Villa player was also voted the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) Footballer of the year (2015).
