DP to provide legal aid to victims of delayed justice

The party has called upon all who have been denied justice to register with them

The Democratic Party (DP) has announced an effort to assist sufferers of delayed justice through compiling criminal cases against human rights that have not received a thorough hearing and final verdict.

This is meant to help victims pursue justice in the courts of law.

According to DP president, Norbert Mao, there are many Ugandans suffering as a result of delayed justice and they need help.

"Many cases continue to haunt Uganda's criminal justice system for example, the Ivan Kamyuka stabbing at a dance club, Joan Kagezi's murder, the shooting of Robinah Kiyingi, the murder of an employee of Desh Kananura, and recently the killing of Kenneth Akena" said Mao.

He added that these are cases that demand attention and these unsolved murders can safely be characterized as evidence that there are many others demanding justice.

The party has therefore called upon all Ugandans who have been denied justice pursuant to such cases to register them at the party head office.

However, Mao noted that the course of seeking justice is going to be aided by DP as a party.

"We are going to aid this process by providing pro bono legal services to ensure justice through a team led by our legal advisor and other assembled lawyers" said Mao.

DP claims this is in line with their long standing commitment to the rule of law, truth and justice.

Mao further showed concern over the continued closure of Makerere University and urged Parliament to intervene and provide prudent short term measures to deal with the crisis at the institution as the visiting committee appointed by President Yoweri Museveni investigates Makerere's problems.

Mao also expressed frustration over the lack of a national consensus on how to appoint an independent electoral commission capable of holding free and fair elections.

This comes after the appointment by Museveni of new commissioners to head the Electoral Commission.
