Two counterterrorism police officers have been shot dead at Nalufenya police station in Jinja town. Simon Niwamanya and Godfrey Wafula were both police constables.

Kiira regional police spokesperson Samson Lubega told reporters on Tuesday that the two cops were killed by their colleagues during a scuffle early Tuesday.

He said the melee started when two of their mates returned to the barracks past midnight - way past the accepted time. The police barracks, according to Lubega, close at 10pm local time.

When they got to the gate, they were denied entry and tried to force their way in through another point.  A bitter verbal exchange is said to have ensued, which spiraled into a physical exchange.

Amid the commotion, one of the returning officers opened live fire and shot Niwagaba and Wafula. Lubega said Niwamanya died on spot while Wafula died on the way to Jinja regional referral hospital.
