Yoghurt key in beating diabetes

Now a study has concluded that probiotic bacteria found in yoghurt could be a key factor cutting the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

A daily tablespoon of yoghurt could reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes by nearly a fifth, a study has found.

Previous research suggested calcium, magnesium, or specific fatty acids in dairy products may help lower the risk of developing the condition.

Now a study has concluded that probiotic bacteria found in yoghurt could be a key factor cutting the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Professor Frank Hu at the Harvard School of Public Health said: "We found that higher intake of yoghurt is associated with a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes, whereas other dairy foods and consumption of total dairy did not show this association.

"The consistent findings for yoghurt suggest that it can be incorporated into a healthy dietary pattern."

The study published in BMC Medicine journal pooled the results of studies that followed the medical history and lifestyle habits of nearly 200,000 professionals.

High consumption of yoghurt among dairy food was associated with a lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
