Nine Makerere University students have been detained at Central Police station in Kampala over unlawful procession.

Police arrested, the guild president Roy Ssemboga, guild Clarke Natukunda and Joshua Kirega from the university main gate as they converged to march to Parliament.

According to the students, they wanted to petition Parliament over the closure of the university.

Deputy Police spokesperson Kampala Metropolitan, Paul Kangave, said they will be charged with inciting violence and holding unlawful procession.

President Yoweri Museveni last week ordered for closure of Makerere University currently embroiled with lecturers' and students' strikes.

Students joined the strike after lecturers under their umbrella body Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) resolved to continue their strike until sh32b in allowance arrears over eight months is paid.
