She intends to plant 11,000 bamboo seedlings of them within one day

Kasokwe Village in Bbale County, Kayunga district is a little dusty village with almost nothing to write about. But this is likely to change on Saturday.

Divine Nabaweesi who is enthusiastic about planting bamboo is set to change her profile and that of this little known village.

Nabaweesi has set her eyes on creating a world record on planting bamboo under the Guinness World Records.

She has nurtured 12,000 bamboo seedlings and intends to plant 11,000 of them within one hour at Kasokwe.

"I have already moved half of the bamboo to Kasokwe and the remaining batch is going to be shifted today ahead of planting tomorrow," she told New Vision in an interview.

She established a bamboo nursery on the land housing their family residence at Najjera.

"I want to make a world record on planting of Bamboo," she said pointing out that she has leased 60 acres of land for 15 years at Kasokwe.

"I have also mobilized out growers with 40acres of land for planting of bamboo" she added.

Nabaweesi who was previously engaged in real estate hopes that bamboo will not only support construction of low cost houses but also provide a number of products including timber which is becoming scarce as rampant deforestation takes its toll on Uganda.

Nabaweesi is a graduate of Social Work and Administration from Makerere University and also attended King's College Budo.
