Court issues criminal summons against DP activists

They were arrested and detained at Kabalagala Police Station on Tuesday for trying to gain entry to the US Embassy

The Buganda Road Court grade one Magistrate Joan Aciro has issued criminal summons against two DP activists for skipping Court.

The criminal summons against Moses Bigirwa and Allan Kitonsa currently on bail, were prompted by state attorney Peter Mugisha.

"Your worship, the case is coming up for hearing. We have two witnesses in court but two of the accused are not in court.  We pray for criminal summons to be issued against them," Mugisha said.

The duo is battling incitement charges together with Juma Kayondo, Harunah Nsibuka and Hakim Kizza Saula.

The case was adjourned to November 18 when the hearing of the case is expected to begin.

Prosecution alleges that the accused on September 14, 2016 at the parliamentary main gate in Kampala, the accused without lawful excuse made statements calculated to incite violence against the public.

It further alleges that on the same day, they also assaulted Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Benson Ombworoh while executing his duty.

They were demonstrating over Nakifuuma MP Kafeero Ssekitoleko's proposal to amend the age limit for judges.

Bigirwa and Kitonsa were among the demonstrators on Tuesday this week who attempted to access the US Embassy in Kampala in support of Republican candidate Donald Trump.

They were arrested and detained at Kabalagala Police Station.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Emilian Kayima, the duo would be charged with unlawful assembly, which carries a penalty of one year in prison on conviction.
