"The government should also do more to sensitize the public about diseases like cancer and diabetes."

The Archbishop of Kampala Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has called on Christians to go for regular medical check-up to keep track of their health status.

He expressed concern that many people are dying early from diseases because of lacking inadequate knowledge.

"Having medical check-ups is crucial," said the prelate.

"If the respective diseases are detected early, they can be treated better. The government should also do more to sensitize the public about diseases like cancer and diabetes, which currently kill many of our people."

These remarks were contained in the archbishop's message read on his behalf by Fr. John Bosco Ssekkono, who represented him at the closure of a two-day medical camp at Rubaga Cathedral.

The camp was organised by Rubaga Cathedral National Foundation as one of the activities to mark 50 years of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kampala.

The Chairman of the organisation, Dr. Saturnitus Kasozi Mulindwa, said the mission of the Catholic Church involved concern for the health welfare of its members, which was why it was involved in the field of health.

The camp attracted over 400 people who were screened and given treatment for diseases like diabetes, high-blood pressure and HIV/AIDS.

The camp was facilitated by medics from Nsambya Hospital, Kyengera Group, JMS and Dr. Agarwal's  Eye Hospital, among other medical organisations.
