Teachers demand for salary arrears

A total of 154 primary teachers in Iganga district have gone without pay for the last five months. The chairman Uganda national teachers union(UNATU) Iganga,Gerald Nagayi while speaking during international teachers day celebrations held at St.Peter clever primary school playgrounds October 5 said majority of the teachers have resorted to begging in order to survive as a result of not being paid. Nagayi said the affected teachers with the assistance of UNATU have tried to persuade the relevant officials at the district headquarters to have the teachers salary arrears paid in vain. “These people keep on telling us that it’s the bureaucracy at the ministry of public service. But how long will that bureaucracy end”he asked He said some teachers in the district have also never received the 15 percent salary increment as promised by government. Nagayi wondered as to why head teachers country wide were exempted from receiving the 15 percent salary increment and yet they were also entitled. “The problems that affect classroom teachers also cuts across with those of head teachers “he said He urged teachers to diversify their sources of earning by setting up income generating activities enable them improve on their house hold incomes instead of relying on salary alone. There was excitement amongst teachers as they took to the floor dancing to old tunes during the celebrations. The district education officer Iganga,Baker Kasadakawo promised to investigate the matter of teachers missing salary and later give a conclusive report about it. Kasadakawo cautioned teacher’s against involving themselves in acts of defilement which is contrary to their ethical code of conduct. He said 3 teachers were last year dismissed from duty after they discovered to have defiled their pupils. “As a teacher the punishment for you is automatic expulsion from duty “he said The Member of Parliament Kigulu south constituency, Andrew Kaluya promised to tour all schools in the constituency seeking views from teachers and parents on how to improve on the academic performance in the area. He later donated shillings 200,000 towards the organization for purchase of an office printer. Kaluya promised to fulfill his campaign pledge of donating past papers and examination tests to schools within the constituency in a bid to improve on the academic performance both at primary and secondary level
