Two-day water shutdown in Kampala

Oct 06, 2016

This is to allow pipe reconnection works at Nakasero.

Several parts of Kampala and other surrounding areas are to experience a 48-hour water shutdown, the National Water and Sewerage Cooperation (NSWC) announced.

According to a press statement issued by the agency, the shutdown starts today (Thursday).

The areas to be affected include; the city centre, parts of Gayaza, Kanyanya, parts of Kyanja, Komamboga, parts of Bwaise.

The principle public relations officer, NWSC-Kampala Water, Viviene Newumbe said the 48-hour interruption is to allow pipe reconnection works at Nakasero to evacuate more water and improve water supply in the central business district.

This follows the recent completion of expansion and rehabilitation works at the Gaba, aimed at expanding water production capacity from 190 million litres of water per day to 240 million litres per day to Kampala Water Supply Area.

This is the third time NWSC is shutting down water supply to allow reconnection of pipes to the new system to meet the demand.

"We are reinforcing our distribution network to ensure the additional volumes of water reach the targeted customers. So far, out of the targeted additional 50 million litres of water per day. we have already added 23 million litres of water per day into the network," said Newumbe.

NWSC targets to increase supply to 240 million litres per day in the next five months. Last month the production increased to 210 million litres per day.
