Police starts community policing in schools

Police in Mbarara have started a community policing exercise in selected Mbarara secondary Schools, as part of the police week activities.

Rwizi region Fire prevention and rescue service officer AIP Fred Sserwanga, Rwizi Region Field Force Unit Commander Collins Kaganzi and Mbarara Police OC Station Swizin Tibesigwa, led other police officers as they moved around Mbarara schools including Mbarara High School and Welden School, all in the municipality.

The two schools were affected by a fire outbreak that gutted students' dormitories in which students properties were destroyed.

The officers carried out sensitization sessions about fire outbreaks and strikes in schools and how the students can respond quickly.

While addressing students at Welden School, Rwizi region fire prevention and rescue service officer AIP Fred Sserwanga challenged students on the misconception that police is an enemy to students.

"Most Ugandans especially you the young generation take police to be your number one enemy, but we are never your enemy but good a friend, only that you did not know this," Ssemwanga stated, arousing mummers from the attentive students.

According to Rwizi Region Police spokesperson Ibn Ssenkumbi, the police chose to make visitations to schools because there are a number of crimes which occur in schools which can be prevented.

"We also realized that if these young students at schools are told about the dangers of crime, they would easily spread the message in their homes and it would give us a wider coverage as well," Ssenkumbi said.

All the districts Police officers in Uganda are doing the same ahead of the climax of the national event at Kololo on Monday.
