Kyambogo University to develop curriculum for nursery teachers

The dean faculty of Education at Kyambogo University Prof. Joyce Ayikoru has said that the university will soon develop a curriculum for training nursery teachers.

She said developing a curriculum training for nursery teachers has come after the Government recognised that early childhood development (ECD)  is the foundation of a child's education.

"If children must have a good education in future, they must be shaped right from 0-5 years so that when they enter the primary level they should have had a good foundation," she added.

Ayikoru explained that this age group of 0-5 years has been left to the private sector in day care centres and nursery schools  where early learners get education before joining the primary level.

However, as the Government, we are also  developing  a curriculum, which nursery teachers in government schools  should follow to give the early learners good foundation because all government primary schools should have early childhood development centres which is not  the case presently' Ayikoru said.

She said this while addressing the Educate! annual global conference  that  took place on last week at UMA hall in Nakawa.

Gemma Musengeneza, the senior programme educator in Educate! Rwanda   at the same occasion said that their country is moving from giving theory work to their students in secondary school to giving them skills that can help them to curb the problem of unemployment especially among the youths.

The conference was attended by teachers from various schools in Uganda and experts in education from Rwanda and Cameroon.
