Youth called to change their mindsets on agriculture

Jallow said there is need to encourage the school going youths in agricultural production to end hunger and address food security.

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Country representative, Alhajji Mohamed Jallow has called for more support to the youths to maximize their potential in the agricultural sector.

Jallow said there is need to encourage the school going youths in agricultural production to end hunger and address food security.He made the remarks at the official closure of the school farm camp held at Gayaza High School yesterday.

"The skills and knowledge the young people acquire from this camp is one of the unique opportunities to change the mindset of the youths towards agriculture as a job for uneducated ones, "Jallow said.

 



The school farm camp on the theme "Skilling Youths in Agribusiness for self-reliance "that attracted over 70 schools across the country was intended to provide  the young people with practical agricultural skills.
 
 "The knowledge and skills these students are getting from here will not only benefit them as individuals but their families and communities, "Jallow. The camp enriched the curriculum of the participating schools from the regions of Uganda.

St Catherine Lira emerged the winner of all various schools that participated in the farm camp with 98 points followed by Nyakasura Girls with 90 while Ndejje Secondary School came 3rd with 78 . The judgment for the award was based on five principles such as marketing, packaging, benefits of the activity as well as community outreach program.

The over role winner was given a heifer and other goodies including watermelons, 2nd and 3rd were only given a heifer.
