AFCON GROUP D QUALIFIER

Uganda v  Comoros (kickoff at 5pm today)

KAMPALA - President Yoweri Museveni has wished the Uganda Cranes all the best as they get set to play Comoros in the two sides' final AFCON Group D qualifier on Sunday at Namboole Stadium.

Uganda are second in the group but level on points (10) with leaders Burkina Faso, who also play later today against Botswana.

The Cranes are looking to making it to the finals of the continent's biggest football tournament for the first time in 39 years, having last featured strongly and finished as runners-up in 1978.

Since then, and even more in recent years, it has been a series of qualification heartbreaks, coming ever so close to advancing.

But this time round, the optimism is high, and even the country's president is hopeful for a turn-around in fortunes.

"I am optimistic they will emerge victorious," tweeted President Museveni, further urging support.

"I urge Ugandans to massively go out and support the team. Thank you."
